Info post for [community profile] cancry

WEAPON: AMBER GUN. Like the name implies, this gun can shoot little blobs of amber that expand slightly upon contact. They can slow you down if you're hit with them currently, but not stop you. They're about the size of softballs and the amber itself is tough, but brittle enough that it can be broken away. Think of like...rapidly cooling hard candy, only a bit stronger than that.

ATTRIBUTES> None so far!

POWERS:

Bag of Holding: Amber's backpack can carry 5 items at a time with no limit on weight, so long as he can physically lift them himself. If you need somebody to carry things for you into a dungeon, then Amber is your man! Just, you know...be careful with trusting him with fragile things, he's clumsy.

Atelier esc Alchemy(tm): Amber's starting power gives him the ability to combine two items into something brand new, generally an offensive item based on the properties of what he used to make it.

EXAMPLE: If he combines a soda can with Rei's ice magic, he can create a single-use ice grenade. He can create 4 items like this at a time before they must be consumed or desummoned to create more. WARNING: Any items used to create items in this way will be consumed and unrecoverable after use.

KEEPING:

Ruddiger: It's Varian's pet raccoon! Look at his little people hands.

The Lizard and I: A small green lizard. Yes, it's alive.

Amber Chunk: A gnarled chunk of amber. It is incredibly hard and impossible to break by normal means.

Efron Poster: A framed poster of Zac Efron. It doesn't say his name, though, so most of you probably won't know who he is anyway. (Currently on Broadhurst dorm wall because why the fuck not)

Maglite (2): A pen-sized flashlight. For some reason, the light inside is blue.

Singing Ginseng Tea: Ginseng tea that really sings! Don't let the tea bags fly away. (Some given to Discord and Salieri, the rest have since somehow been consumed)

Red Vines: Share one with your new best friend. Red Vines- What the hell can't they do?!

A Lizard (Given by Salieri)

Gaf Tape (2): Everyone needs gaf tape. (Given by Salieri)

Rope (ITS A ROPE) (Given by Salieri)

Dry-Ice (Given by Salieri)

Odd Telephone: An odd black telephone. If you pick it up, you can hear a chorus of voices on the other end asking for "Bobby" in a variety of different ways. They won't respond to anything you say. (Given by Salieri)

Chocolate Chip Cookie (2): Wow, this place has pretty good concessions! This cookie has the perfect distribution of chips. (Almost stolen by Ruddiger but saved before he could die, also Consumed)

Mozart Kugein: Some kind of little candies with Mozart's face on the wrapper. (Consumed)

Milky White (2): The cow as white as milk - now in adorable plush doll form! There's a tiny bell hanging around her neck. (This belongs to Ruddiger now; correction they BOTH belong to him)

Mama's Lunch (2): A delicate pink lunchbox. It's contents include a protein shake, a falcon's egg and a rock.

Green Glasses: A pair of steampunky golden glasses with green lenses. Wow, it's all grand and it's all green! (Wearing)

Flannel: It's a green flannel! How comfy and warm!

Prop Deer: A life-sized, fake deer. A dark aura lurks behind its plastic eyes.

A Suitcase: Finally, a way to succeed in business! But do you want to try? Includes a framed photograph of a dark-haired young man in a suit.

Compact: A small compact mirror for applying makeup on the go. This will always help you look your best! (He doesn't wear makeup but you never know when you might need a portable mirror ok)

Stabbing Knife: A knife that's perfect for stabbing someone! Except...the blade is dull, and retracts back into the handle when pressed upon. Maybe you can fake a stabbing.

===

UP FOR GRABS/GIVEN AWAY:

Sandbag: A small sandbag. It only weighs a few pounds.

Opera Glasses (2): A pair of old-fashioned opera glasses, like little binoculars with a stick. They look antique, but still work well.

Grammy: A small medal on a pedestal. Congratulations; you've won!

The Lyin' King: A soft lion-skin rug. Take a load off, have a nap, watch out for wildebeests.

Rainbow Fantasy Jacket: A coat of many colors! It is red and yellow and green and brown and blue...

Doctor's Costume: The package says it's a doctor's costume, but what kind of doctor dresses like this?

A Law Textbook: A law school textbook, still in the plastic wrap.

The Ultimate Treasure: A pair of tickets, apparently to a show called Hamilton. The vending machine slides them over with an odd air of reverence.

Pom-Poms: A pair of red and white cheerleading pom-poms. Hurrah!

Black Hat: A pointed black hat. It's really sharp - and you know what they say. Black is this year's pink!

76 Trombones: Seventy-six trombones fall out of the merchandise booth. Fucking rip. (Left in the cafeteria)

Green Elixir: Have another drink, my dark-eyed beauty... A green liquid in a small bottle made of frosted green glass. Drinking it will reveal that it is 1) very tasty and 2) straight absinthe. (Given to Salieri)

First Impressions

Visual: Image ref! Varian is a thin, gangly thing, and a bit on the short side for his age. His fringe has a blue streak in it because he's a TEENAGER and teenagers have those, but he also had it when he was a toddler so I don't...actually know how to explain that

Demeanor: Varian is awkward but well-meaning, tends to talk fast and goes on rambling tangents if he isn't stopped. He's really passionate about the things he cares about, like alchemy in inventing, and he's just. Quintessential nerd.

Aural: Linking this because my GOD Jeremy Jordan has the voice of an angel

Olfactory: Lots of notes of...burning, but in a "I recently caught part of my room on fire" kind of way, also some chemicals in the distance

OOC

Backtagging: Super fine with backtagging!

Fourthwalling: When applicable, go for it my dude

Physical affection: Varian isn't a super tactile person unless it's with somebody he knows, so he might not be initially receptive depending on interactions up until that point. It's basically a "not off the table, but also treat him like you might a cat" sort of deal

Violence: Ask first, but I'm super down. I mean this IS a murdergame after all

Shipping/Romance: Varian's super one-sided crush on Cass is...in a nebulous state of not quite being one of the past just yet with the memories he has, but also something that super doesn't last long and I'm not interested in pursuing, obviously. So if things shake out that our characters click, I'd be super down for it!

Player permissions: Please make a note in your header if emetophobia/references to characters being sick is going to be present, as I would like to avoid it! Especially since characters in the past have often been sick in response to finding corpses. I'd also like warning if its going to come up in threads, Im fine with vauge refs I just don't like it being sprung on me.

There isn't a whole lot that comes up with Varian that I can think of needing to warn for, except something that's kindof a spoiler for the series so highlight if you want to read:

It's not MENTIONED outright but Varian alludes to harming the Queen/outright letting Rapunzel die in one of his experiments to accomplish one of his goals, so the main point to take from this is there may be references in meta to Regicide if that ever happens to come up at any point, but I'll make sure to warn properly if so

If anything comes up that needs discussing though PLEASE do not hesitate to let me know.

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Varian
Age: 15
Canon: Tangled: The Series (Or alternatively Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure)
Canon Point: End of Season 3
Character Information: Varian on the wiki!

Personality:

In the world of Corona, Varian’s intelligence oftentimes places him in a strange spot among both his peers and elders. Although he’s young, he has an insane drive and passion for inventing things and studying the art of alchemy, a science that’s so powerful and little-known to most Coronians that many people consider him to be a wizard (something he vehemently rejects, preferring science to magic). He’s always placed huge importance on wanting to prove himself to people, his village, and above all his own father. He wants solely to be able to help people with his inventions, as is shown in the way he attempts to create a system of underground boilers capable of funneling hot water to all of the homes in his village, a system that- in his canon’s current time period- isn’t available even in the main part of the kingdom. One of Varian’s biggest stumbling blocks is his own naivety and sometimes overconfidence in his own work, which leads him to overlooking his inventions and insisting that he has things under control even when he isn’t entirely sure he does. Though later in canon he begins showing signs of learning from his mistakes, insisting that people don’t bother with his creations and exercise caution around them, perhaps afraid that they’re going to cause some sort of trouble otherwise (which is generally the case, since a lot of Varian’s inventions caused trouble in his village which left him feeling like a constant disappointment to his father).

These missteps and shortcomings were never enough to stop Varian however, as he continued to work with his alchemy to try to achieve bigger and better things. He’s earnest, kind, and well-meaning despite the mistakes he makes, preferring to start anew in a different direction to try to make things better for people in any way he can and to hopefully someday make his father proud of him. He moved quickly on from the hot water system upon noticing strange black rocks popping up in his village, posing a very real threat to the people living there that his father seemed to only want to ignore and brush off, assuring everyone things were alright. Varian’s mistakes soon culminate in an attempt to use a formula he devised to destroy the black rocks, only to find that it causes them to expand dangerously at an alarming rate. Varian’s father Quirin pushes Varian out of the way of his out of control experiment just in time to become encased in the amber left behind, prompting Varian to rush from the village to the Kingdom of Corona seeking help. It is here where the more negative traits to Varian’s personality quickly come to light, bringing him into the role of the series’ first main antagonist. Princess Rapunzel, overwhelmed with her duties at the castle while her parents are away, is forced to turn Varian away when he begs her to help him rescue his father, resulting in him returning to him being too late to save. The act is seen as an injustice and gross betrayal of trust and the friendship he thought they shared, resulting in Varian very rapidly allowing his heart to be consumed by rage and an obsession to make the people of Corona pay for what they’d done to him, as well as to save his father’s life by any means necessary.

“By any means” is a quite literal statement, as Varian’s drive for revenge pushes him into some dark places. He shows a capability to manipulate and attack people if he feels it’s necessary to achieving his goals. He tricks Rapunzel into stealing the sundrop flower with him, believing it holds the key to saving his father, immediately betraying her the moment the flower is in his possession. When the flower ultimately doesn’t work, he realizes that it’s Rapunzel herself he needs- Rapunzel wielding the magic of the sundrop itself in her golden hair- and sets out straight away to attack the kingdom directly. He slowly grows more bitter and unreasonable as attempts to get through to him are shoved away and ignored, his focus only on 1) revenge and 2) saving his father, no matter the cost. His attack on the kingdom fails, so he escalates things further by capturing the Queen with the intent of using her as a bargaining chip to get to Rapunzel. Attempted regicide is another box that can be ticked on Varian’s list of “Things He Did Wrong”. He even admits to not caring whether Rapunzel lives or dies in his attempts to use her to save Quirin. Ultimately though, despite Varian’s repeated attempts to get to Rapunzel to save his father, even her hair has no affect on the amber keeping him encased, and after he loses control of the situation he’s subsequently captured and brought into custody by the kingdom.

Spending a year in prison seemed to give Varian a chance to ruminate over his actions, resulting in him feeling deep remorse over the things he’d done. However, his naivety comes to light again when instead of trying to make amends any kind of normal way, he joins up with the Separatists of Saporia (a group of individuals who are sworn to destroy Corona) and plans on using a serum of his design to gas the city that will wipe their memories, absolving him of his crimes and giving him a second chance to prove himself and be friends with Rapunzel again. Unsurprisingly, the Separatists turn against him and capture both him and Rapunzel with plans to blow up the Kingdom instead, and it is here that Rapunzel is finally able to talk to Varian and apologize for not helping him when he needed it, as well as giving him the opportunity to admit his fears of being forever ostracized and hated for the things he’d done, though he does at least express understanding in the fact that he HAD done awful, terrible things that deserved no apology.

Varian’s stubbornness and reckless drive to achieve his goals dug him several graves over the course of the series, his arc culminating in him learning that the path of evil isn’t the true answer despite how right it felt at the time. He isn’t immediately forgiven for the things he’d done despite joining forces with Rapunzel and relying on his ability to adapt in a crisis to save the kingdom from the Separatists, though he is able to reform himself more in the eyes of the kingdom with subsequent good deeds and acts, as well as primarily using his alchemy and inventions to try and aid the kingdom when Cassandra assumes the role of the series’ new primary antagonist in his place. Even after everything that happened, Varian tends to struggle when it comes to trusting people and letting them in when he had been betrayed so terribly before, and especially after the things he’d done that- in his mind- are completely unforgivable. His cunning and smarts play a key role in the series’ climax as he is able to completely reverse engineer a dead language from a scroll so it can be translated, producing a spell that Rapunzel is able to recite to unlock the power of the sundrop in its entirety. He also is able to rebuild a machine from blueprints that intended to trap the Other other main antagonist (an evil warlock named Zhan Tiri who had been puppeteering and manipulating Cassandra) in an alternate dimension, and the machine- once built- actually works for its intended purpose even though they fail to actually capture Zhan Tiri. Even later still, Varian builds a gun that is capable of firing the serum that trapped his father in amber, intending to use it to “destroy Cassandra” should she ever pose a threat to the kingdom, only rescinding when Rapunzel orders him not to use it unless she gives him the okay. Even though Varian is overall reformed and redeemed by series end, it’s clear that he still has some tendencies in him that lead to more impulsive solutions to problems, sometimes ones that could actually cause serious harm if he feels like that’s the only real solution.
