Character Information: Varian on the wiki! Personality:In the world of Corona, Varian’s intelligence oftentimes places him in a strange spot among both his peers and elders. Although he’s young, he has an insane drive and passion for inventing things and studying the art of alchemy, a science that’s so powerful and little-known to most Coronians that many people consider him to be a wizard (something he vehemently rejects, preferring science to magic). He’s always placed huge importance on wanting to prove himself to people, his village, and above all his own father. He wants solely to be able to help people with his inventions, as is shown in the way he attempts to create a system of underground boilers capable of funneling hot water to all of the homes in his village, a system that- in his canon’s current time period- isn’t available even in the main part of the kingdom. One of Varian’s biggest stumbling blocks is his own naivety and sometimes overconfidence in his own work, which leads him to overlooking his inventions and insisting that he has things under control even when he isn’t entirely sure he does. Though later in canon he begins showing signs of learning from his mistakes, insisting that people don’t bother with his creations and exercise caution around them, perhaps afraid that they’re going to cause some sort of trouble otherwise (which is generally the case, since a lot of Varian’s inventions caused trouble in his village which left him feeling like a constant disappointment to his father).
These missteps and shortcomings were never enough to stop Varian however, as he continued to work with his alchemy to try to achieve bigger and better things. He’s earnest, kind, and well-meaning despite the mistakes he makes, preferring to start anew in a different direction to try to make things better for people in any way he can and to hopefully someday make his father proud of him. He moved quickly on from the hot water system upon noticing strange black rocks popping up in his village, posing a very real threat to the people living there that his father seemed to only want to ignore and brush off, assuring everyone things were alright. Varian’s mistakes soon culminate in an attempt to use a formula he devised to destroy the black rocks, only to find that it causes them to expand dangerously at an alarming rate. Varian’s father Quirin pushes Varian out of the way of his out of control experiment just in time to become encased in the amber left behind, prompting Varian to rush from the village to the Kingdom of Corona seeking help. It is here where the more negative traits to Varian’s personality quickly come to light, bringing him into the role of the series’ first main antagonist. Princess Rapunzel, overwhelmed with her duties at the castle while her parents are away, is forced to turn Varian away when he begs her to help him rescue his father, resulting in him returning to him being too late to save. The act is seen as an injustice and gross betrayal of trust and the friendship he thought they shared, resulting in Varian very rapidly allowing his heart to be consumed by rage and an obsession to make the people of Corona pay for what they’d done to him, as well as to save his father’s life by any means necessary.
“By any means” is a quite literal statement, as Varian’s drive for revenge pushes him into some dark places. He shows a capability to manipulate and attack people if he feels it’s necessary to achieving his goals. He tricks Rapunzel into stealing the sundrop flower with him, believing it holds the key to saving his father, immediately betraying her the moment the flower is in his possession. When the flower ultimately doesn’t work, he realizes that it’s
Rapunzel herself he needs- Rapunzel wielding the magic of the sundrop itself in her golden hair- and sets out straight away to attack the kingdom directly. He slowly grows more bitter and unreasonable as attempts to get through to him are shoved away and ignored, his focus only on 1) revenge and 2) saving his father, no matter the cost. His attack on the kingdom fails, so he escalates things further by capturing the Queen with the intent of using her as a bargaining chip to get to Rapunzel. Attempted regicide is another box that can be ticked on Varian’s list of “Things He Did Wrong”. He even admits to not caring whether Rapunzel lives or dies in his attempts to use her to save Quirin. Ultimately though, despite Varian’s repeated attempts to get to Rapunzel to save his father, even her hair has no affect on the amber keeping him encased, and after he loses control of the situation he’s subsequently captured and brought into custody by the kingdom.
Spending a year in prison seemed to give Varian a chance to ruminate over his actions, resulting in him feeling deep remorse over the things he’d done. However, his naivety comes to light again when instead of trying to make amends any kind of normal way, he joins up with the Separatists of Saporia (a group of individuals who are sworn to destroy Corona) and plans on using a serum of his design to gas the city that will wipe their memories, absolving him of his crimes and giving him a second chance to prove himself and be friends with Rapunzel again. Unsurprisingly, the Separatists turn against him and capture both him and Rapunzel with plans to blow up the Kingdom instead, and it is here that Rapunzel is finally able to talk to Varian and apologize for not helping him when he needed it, as well as giving him the opportunity to admit his fears of being forever ostracized and hated for the things he’d done, though he does at least express understanding in the fact that he HAD done awful, terrible things that deserved no apology.
Varian’s stubbornness and reckless drive to achieve his goals dug him several graves over the course of the series, his arc culminating in him learning that the path of evil isn’t the true answer despite how right it felt at the time. He isn’t immediately forgiven for the things he’d done despite joining forces with Rapunzel and relying on his ability to adapt in a crisis to save the kingdom from the Separatists, though he is able to reform himself more in the eyes of the kingdom with subsequent good deeds and acts, as well as primarily using his alchemy and inventions to try and aid the kingdom when Cassandra assumes the role of the series’ new primary antagonist in his place. Even after everything that happened, Varian tends to struggle when it comes to trusting people and letting them in when he had been betrayed so terribly before, and especially after the things he’d done that- in his mind- are completely unforgivable. His cunning and smarts play a key role in the series’ climax as he is able to completely reverse engineer a dead language from a scroll so it can be translated, producing a spell that Rapunzel is able to recite to unlock the power of the sundrop in its entirety. He also is able to rebuild a machine from blueprints that intended to trap the Other other main antagonist (an evil warlock named Zhan Tiri who had been puppeteering and manipulating Cassandra) in an alternate dimension, and the machine- once built- actually works for its intended purpose even though they fail to actually capture Zhan Tiri. Even later still, Varian builds a gun that is capable of firing the serum that trapped his father in amber, intending to use it to “destroy Cassandra” should she ever pose a threat to the kingdom, only rescinding when Rapunzel orders him not to use it unless she gives him the okay. Even though Varian is overall reformed and redeemed by series end, it’s clear that he still has some tendencies in him that lead to more impulsive solutions to problems, sometimes ones that could actually cause serious harm if he feels like that’s the only real solution.
